It was long overdue, but finally, our little big guy is in a proper big boy bed. We’ve had him in a toddler bed for quite some time now. It was big enough for me to lay on it… but then, I’m pretty short.
The hold-up was the time it took for Dad to get the new one finished.
You see, it started its life as the bottom bunk of a 1970s wooden bunk bed. Without a bed head or foot. But it had these massive drawers underneath. So I asked Dad if he could build a tall head and short foot, and could the head have white vinyl that was studded with vintage upholstery tacks?
Wasn’t asking much, was I?!
See, we went from this below, to the bed you just saw above.
You might have noticed weird chenille and padding on the wall in the pictures above, beside the bed?
Funny story with that. When the little man was a baby in his cot {crib}, he used to rock himself to sleep. It made such a racket! Then when he got in the toddler bed, he would, while 80% asleep, sit up, and rock back and forth to get himself back to sleep…. banging his head into the wall. I can’t tell you how many times through the night I used to go to him, straightening him up and telling him to stop.
One morning I went in to check on him, and in the darkness, I saw something black on the wall!
Horrified, I thought there was an enormous spider!!! But really…. 10” round? I think I must have been sleepy…
Anyway, I realised it wasn’t a spider. But with the light on, I looked at his head, and wondered why he had white powdery stuff on it?
And realised, I was looking straight at a HOLE IN THE WALL!
His persistent banging eventually weakened a hole in the plaster!
Hence the quick fix, “temporary” padding on the wall.
Temporary.
It’s only been there for 4 years.
At least now, with the new bed, he hasn’t been doing any head-banging.
And next year, when we’re ready to do some major reno work around here, we’ll be replastering.
Until then, we’ll just call him our little head-banger!
And he can enjoy his new comfy pillow top bed. With his oldest favourite teddy bear.
…while he pretends to sleep tight

His bedroom is awesome, Natasha! I can't believe he actually banged a hole in the wall over time, that's so funny. But also kind of worried you too, I'm sure! I knew another kid who did that exact same thing (the rocking), so it must just be something some kids do! Hopefully he'll have sweet, restful sleep in his beautiful big boy bed.
ReplyDeleteI love it Natasha and he looks pretty happy about it too! My youngest was a headbanger and used to rock himself to sleep too. The headbanging, though, only happened when he was chucking a tantrum and once he cracked the glass in a french door we "used" to have!!!! Thank goodness it was only the glass that was hurt! LOL!
ReplyDeleteHi Natasha, what a great job your dad did of Leroy's bed. Love it. All that fabulous storage (can't ever have too much storage). Kids have so many funny habits with their sleeping.

Love the new bed....his room is so cute. How funny about the hole in the wall.

Natasha it is so awesome and he is so adorable!!! Sweet boy and what a good momma you are! :)
ReplyDeleteThe new bed looks great and everything goes together so nicely. My kids room is a hodge podge of this and that and everything. They keep asking for a makeover. What we need is more space. :/ Hope you are having a good day. Tammy
ReplyDeleteOh my! Ouchy ouchy! He is just a little sweetie and your hubby did a fantastic job on the bed. You outdid yourself with the cool vintage decor, too! Love it!

Your head banger is a gorgeous child with a gorgeous room! I need to get the Princess in her big girl bed, she sleeps with me currently! Lol! Rachael:)
ReplyDeleteHis room is absolutely gorgeous, and his new bed is lovely. His quilts are particularly sweet - I'm a quilter and always drawn to handmade quilts.
ReplyDeleteI just had to comment because my son has always been a rocker/head-banger since the moment he was able to.
We went through two cribs/cots by the time he was two years old, and we ended up having to build his bed into an alcove in his bedroom to give it maximum strength for his now big-boy rocking/head-banging.
Sometimes he rocks so violently we can hear him all the way downstairs.
He's 13 now and still rocks/head-bangs, and it's even noisier than ever.
I think it's just the way some children comfort themselves at bedtime/night-time.

Oh, there's my cute little guy! He is growing so fast! His room is awesome. You and hubby did a great job on his bed. And, I love the story about the chenille thingy on the wall!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful bed! Your little man has a fabulous bedroom! I think I too would leave the padding for awhile until you know for sure the rocking is over. TFS!
ReplyDeleteHugs!
What JOY it is to see your little handsome boy having the chance to have his own his own A M A Z I N G room! I bet this will be the beginning of the end of the banging!! I do!

Did you sew the bear? Lovely bedroom.
ReplyDeleteThe bedroom and 'new' bed look fabulous. Your husband did a great job. By the way, when I was a kid I used to rock myself to sleep, too! It drove my parents nuts. My Dad called me 'Elvis' - this was the late 50's and rock and roll was the new thing!

ReplyDeleteCute room you have created for your little man. Looks like I ended up joining your revamp it party with the inspiration to tidy up our blog space.
ReplyDeleteHis whole room looks adorable, Natasha! I especially noticed his little lamp!
ReplyDeleteI've never had a head banger- unless you count when little brother hit big brother over the head with a hammer. Boys! Gotta love 'em! ♥
What a beautiful (handsome) room you have created. Love every aspect of it. He is some lucky boy.
ReplyDeleteMaureen
Well he's an adorable little head banger lol. When our son was a baby his thing during sleep was to pull out the hair on one side of his head... ended up completely bald on the one side. The subconscious mind is a mysterious thing, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteLooks Great!! Your dad is just like Mine a real Clever Cookie!!!Must be where we both get our creative skills from!!
ReplyDeleteOh Natasha, this is such a sweet little room, I can hardly stand it! Everything looks so cozy and fun, just perfect for your precious little boy. I was laughing out loud about the hole in the wall. Poor little man. You must have freaked out when you saw that hole! LOL....Rock on Leroy!

Oh my gosh, his room is just the cutest little boys room I have ever seen!!! I love every single thing. I can't believe he put a hole in the wall with his head banging!! he looks so adorable sleeping there with that little grin, ;)

ReplyDeletexoxo
yes! I'm using all sorts of actions now, thanks to you Heather!! this was a vintage action, and the camellias also had an action plus the pioneer woman's boost on each one too!
ReplyDeleteI really love what your Dad has done with that bed,its gorgeous ! as are all the extras ... i have some cushions and lamps which look similar ... wonder if it is the same lady in Australia :-) You have made the room look as good as any interior magazine and of course i love love Jenn's american flyer creation, it all looks perfect together.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes always Ginny x
His room somehow reminded me of Christopher Robin's room. It is so cute with all the vintage decor... Hes a sweety and sure is growing up fast...

ReplyDeleteOh Natasha!!! His room is precious. Everything from the bed, covering, and his lovely bedroom decor and accessories. ;)
Thanks for sharing the story with us. I too would have freaked if I saw a hole in the wall due to you banging of the crib. ha! ha! XOXO,Jenn
What a lovely new room for your little guy. It is so beautiful. I laughed about the hole in the wall. My in-laws used to love to tell the story of how their son would rock his crib right across the room at night. My DH ended up a musician. Is it time to start Leroy on clarinet lessons? lol
ReplyDeleteThe show this weekend looks so fun. Wish I lived closer and could attend. Have fun!
~Marilee
Looove that new bed...what a great design feature with the white vinyl and upholstery tacks! The room and all the special details are so great :) Look at how grown up he looks...awww even the darker hair! Big boy bed for the big boy :) P.S. The photo of you on the blog is sooo great..I love your hair Miss!! How gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing room! It is my idea of a boys dream room.
ReplyDeleteTrust me...he will survive the head-banging. I was a head-banger past his age. All of a sudden, I just stopped. No brain damage...no flat side of the head! The odd thing is that when I think of why I did it...it felt good...hmmm...
